Melissa is the artist behind Witch Hazel Art, a mixed-media creative practice inspired by classic botanical illustration, natural history, magic, and folklore. A self-taught artist and maker based in Waterloo, Melissa is deeply connected to nature, which shapes both her creative work and her presence. She is an inspiration and a breath of fresh air to those who meet her, bringing a grounded, thoughtful energy to all that she creates.
Witch Hazel Art was established during the early months of the COVID-19 pandemic as Melissa’s response to finding connection, comfort, and security in the natural world. Her practice became a therapeutic outlet for navigating anxiety and overwhelm, while also inviting a much-needed sense of slowness, reflection, and care.
Working primarily in watercolour, Melissa embraces a medium that encourages patience, surrender, and openness to unexpected outcomes. She believes that some of the most beautiful work emerges through play, experimentation, and allowing space for mistakes.
Melissa also teaches Watercolour for Wellness with the City of Kitchener. She sees her creative practice as a powerful tool for self-expression, storytelling, self-care, and community building.
